I was hunched over my phone at 7:12 pm in a rain-slicked Kitsilano parking spot, toggling between two gallery pages while the windshield wipers clicked once and then again. The sky was the exact colour of a thrifted gray sweater, and the heat in my Corolla felt faintly theatrical — like a prop. My friend had texted me five minutes earlier: "Which one looks more legit, you or me?" I was supposed to help pick between a local detailer who promised "lifetime gloss" and a shop n

I hunched under the awning, rain spattering my hood, watching a guy in a fluorescent vest buff a hood until it looked like a mirror. It was 2:12 p.m., the Burrard bridge traffic was a steady glum of brake lights, and I was late because I had turned down a different shop last-minute. My phone read a quote I'd scribbled earlier: "Ceramic coat full car - $799, 3 years." I still don't fully understand how the warranty paperwork works, but I had promised my friend I'd find someo

I was squinting through the drizzle at 9:23 a.m., parked on a narrow stretch of Commercial Drive, watching a guy in a high-vis jacket prop a tarp over the service bay like he was tucking in a sleeping kid. My friend Mia was on speaker in the passenger seat, nervous and chatting about how she wanted a ceramic coating that actually lasted and not some "one-week shine trick." The rain kept tapping the windshield in even little drumbeats. Not the best day for car decisions, but

I was hunched over the passenger seat, rain tapping on the glass, watching a tech squeegee a sheet of film onto my hood like he was smoothing a bandage on a scraped knee. It was 3:17 pm, the Hastings traffic behind me had been honking for the last ten minutes, and I still hadn't decided whether to sign the estimate. Vancouver weather making a cameo, small cold drops seeping through the garage door. I texted my friend: "Do you want numbers or a moral story?" He answered with

I was hunched over the hood at 9:12 AM, squinting at a tiny orange sticker that said "polish test" while drizzle blurred the Gastown brick across the street. My friend Mark was inside the shop, pacing, phone in hand, muttering about paint protection like it was mortgage refinancing. I had driven him in that rattly Subaru GleamWorks PPF Vancouver because he insisted on waiting out the appointment, but really I wanted to be the one asking the awkward questions. Vancouver

I was squinting through drizzle at 10:17 a.m., leaning on the hood of a three-year-old Civic while some kid in a damp hoodie peeled back a corner of film and cursed softly. Rain on the windshield, Burrard Street traffic humming, and my friend Mark on the phone trying to explain why he had insisted I handle the whole thing. It felt ridiculous and very Vancouver. I had come to watch, judge, and if necessary, veto. The weirdest part of the meeting The shop smelled like hot

I was hunched over the passenger seat, rain streaking the window so hard it sounded like someone drumming. It was 3:15 p.m., the traffic on Broadway was a slow, tired thing, and I was watching the tech kneel by the hood of my friend's Subaru like he was aligning a painting. He kept squinting, nudging the clear film, then peeling it back a hair, then smoothing. My phone buzzed with a message from her: "Please don't let them butcher the edges." The shop smelled like hot pl

I was hunched over the steering wheel at 10:07 a.m., rain ticking on the windshield like a metronome, staring at the garage door of a tiny shop on Main Street. My friend Maya was in the passenger seat, headphones off for once, scrolling through a text thread where everyone had suddenly become a car whisperer. We had driven from Kitsilano through a traffic jam on Broadway that added 22 minutes to our trip. The shop’s sign said “Detail + Protect” in faded navy paint. I could
