I was hunched over the hood at 9:12 a.m., rain starting to spit onto the driveway in Mount Pleasant, and my phone buzzed with a message: "How long is this going to take?" My friend had dropped off her Subaru the night before, eyes bright with the kind of trust you only give someone who once fixed your sink. I had promised a quick ceramic coating job, partly because she needed the car back for a weekend road trip, and partly because the idea of doing it slow and perfect felt

I was squatting in the parking lot of a tiny shop on Main Street, rain spattering the windshield, scrolling through insurance emails at 7:12 p.m., when my friend texted, Are you sure they have liability? His car was inside with ceramic coating work underway, and I had promised to "look into the insurance thing." I had not expected to be the person doing this, but there I was, under the flicker of the shop's neon sign, feeling damp and mildly unqualified. The shop smelled

I was squinting into the drizzle, hood up, leaning over the passenger fender at 8:17 AM outside Cambie and King Edward, trying not to get my jacket soaked while my friend's new Corolla steamed slightly from the wash. The whole car still smelled like the shop — a mix of solvent and lemon cleaner — and the installer at ppf bancouver was scrolling through photos on his phone, saying, "Looks good, right?" I had promised to do a thorough once-over and, frankly, I wanted to look

I was crouched under a soggy canopy outside a shop on Cambie at 11:12 a.m., rain running down my hood, staring at my friend’s phone while he scrolled through review after review. The car sat two blocks away, a little dent in the rear bumper that he kept apologizing for, and he kept muttering, "I just want it to look decent for summer." No grand plan, no checklist. Just a Sunday in Vancouver, greasy coffee in hand, a mild sense of panic about making the right call. Traffi

I was hunched over the hood of my friend’s Corolla at 9:17 a.m., rain still misting down off the Burrard Bridge, trying not to drip on the paint while I scrolled through notes on my phone. We were parked outside a tiny shop in Mount Pleasant that smelled like rubber and coffee, and three different installers had given quotes the week before. My friend needed ppf bancouver work and maybe ceramic coating vancouver after, and she wanted someone who wouldn't ghost her when a st

I was hunched over the hood at 9:12 a.m., rain still spitting, trying to wipe off a bead of water that refused to leave the paint. The friend I dragged along — Mark — had his hands shoved deep in his pockets like it was a funeral, not a car shopping mission. We were parked on West 4th, between the sushi place and a bike shop, staring at a Subaru that looked fine from ten feet and suspicious up close. The whole thing started because Mark wanted to protect his new paint wi

I was crouched under the fluorescent light in a Gastown shop, the smell of solvents and espresso floating together, when the technician handed me a tiny squeegee and said, "You ready?" My palms were still damp from the rain outside, and I was trying to remember whether I had actually read about this stuff or just watched too many car-detailing videos at 2 a.m. The clock on the wall said 3:10 p.m., the street noise made the shop feel small, and I realized I didn't know as mu

I was hunched over the hood at 9:12 a.m., rain still dripping off the awning, trying not to breathe in the smell of polishing compound and exhaust. The shop's fluorescent lights made the black paint look like it had a thousand tiny moons. My friend James was inside talking price with the technician. I kept running my fingernail over a swirl and feeling foolish for doing it in front of a pro, but the groove was there, faint and maddening. The shop was on Main, just past C
