I was hunched over the hood of my friend’s Corolla at 9:17 a.m., rain still misting down off the Burrard Bridge, trying not to drip on the paint while I scrolled through notes on my phone. We were parked outside a tiny shop in Mount Pleasant that smelled like rubber and coffee, and three different installers had given quotes the week before. My friend needed ppf bancouver work and maybe ceramic coating vancouver after, and she wanted someone who wouldn't ghost her GleamW

I was crouched in the drizzle, hood of my friend's Subaru open, a roll of questionable masking tape stuck to my palm, watching the installer peel back a corner of film with the patience of someone who has done this three times a day for years. It was 3:15 p.m., the sky over Kitsilano bruised grey, and the sound of traffic on West 4th threaded through the shop like a metronome. My friend kept muttering about rock chips on the hood, and I kept thinking about all the tiny deci

I hunched under the awning, rain spattering my hood, watching a guy in a fluorescent vest buff a hood until it looked like a mirror. It was 2:12 p.m., the Burrard bridge traffic was a steady glum of brake lights, and I was late because I had turned down a different shop last-minute. My phone read a quote I'd scribbled earlier: "Ceramic coat full car - $799, 3 years." I still don't fully understand how the warranty paperwork works, but I had promised my friend I'd find someo

I was hunched over the passenger seat at 9:10 a.m., the rain still sketching thin lines on the windshield, watching a black Ferrari pull out of a narrow lane in Gastown like it owned the wet cobblestones. My friend’s message pinged: "Which place do you trust for ppf bancouver?" I had three appointments lined up and a morning of small annoyances ahead. I wanted to be useful, not mysterious, so I decided to actually test the vibe of each shop rather than just forward links.

I was halfway through rinsing coffee from my sleeve when the tech leaned in and said, "We guarantee coverage for ten years, but you have to bring it in every two years for an inspection." Rain was splattering the windshield like static, the kind Vancouver rain that doesn't really pour but insists on being noticed. I had driven across town from Kitsilano at 3:15 p.m., stuck behind a bus that never seemed to decide when to stop. My friend was waiting in the passenger seat, sc

I was hunched over the steering wheel, rain stinging the windshield like tiny needles, when the shop finally texted "we can see it at 10:30." It was 10:12, I had a thermos with lukewarm coffee between my knees, and my friend's old Subaru idling beside me had been polished by me to the point where I could see my own tired face in the hood. I was halfway between relieved and annoyed, because Vancouver traffic had turned the 15 minute drive into 40, and now I had to explain to

I was squinting at a tiny hologram on a bottle of ceramic coating in the back of a crowded shop on Main Street, my jacket still damp from the rain, when my friend Mark texted: "Are you sure this is real?" The street noise of buses and someone shouting about ramen blurred into a steady hum. It was 4:12 pm and the shop's fluorescent lights made the liquid inside the bottle look like it belonged in a chemistry lab. I had promised to check this out after he found a deal online

I was crouched by the passenger door at 7:15 a.m., umbrella dripping on the concrete, while the tech from the mobile detail van wiped a stubborn bird spot with the kind of calm that comes from doing this a hundred times. My friend Maya was inside the car, slightly frantic, scrolling through messages about work deadlines and the fact that her weekend flight was in three hours. She had called me two days earlier because she finally decided she was tired of swapping between wa
